Partnering for a Stronger, Healthier Kentucky

In October 2024, the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees issued a bold charge: to focus the university’s full capacity on improving the health and well-being of the Commonwealth.

That charge became the Advancing Kentucky Together (AKT) Network — a statewide partnership connecting organizations that share one mission: building a stronger, healthier Kentucky.

Through the AKT Network, the university and its partners are aligning ideas, resources and expertise to improve lives in every region of the state. Together, we are creating a model for what it means for a public university to serve its people.

Our Mission

To unite the University of Kentucky’s research, service and learning capabilities with partners  to co-create solutions that expand opportunity, strengthen communities and improve well-being across Kentucky.

Our Vision

A Commonwealth where every Kentuckian has access to quality care, strong education, meaningful work and a connected community.

We are focused squarely and strategically on the holistic health needs of the state. Doing that successfully is the single most important way we can advance this state.

Our Core Pillars

Healthcare Access and Innovation

Kentucky’s well-being begins with access to care. Through this pillar, AKT partners are expanding healthcare reach in every region — from rural clinics to advanced research hospitals — while strengthening the workforce that delivers it. Together, we’re driving innovation in prevention, treatment and health education to improve outcomes and quality of life for all Kentuckians.

Education and Opportunity Pathways

A strong Commonwealth depends on a strong education pipeline. This pillar connects schools, colleges and communities to expand access to learning at every stage of life. Partners are developing pathways that prepare students for college and meaningful careers, ensuring Kentucky’s learners have the tools to thrive and contribute to the state’s future.

Workforce and Economic Development

Kentucky’s economy grows when its people do. This pillar aligns training programs, credentials and industry partnerships to meet regional and statewide needs. AKT partners are helping connect Kentuckians to high-demand jobs, support small business innovation and attract new investment that strengthens communities and families across the state.

Land-grant and Community Engagement

As the state’s land-grant university, UK is called to serve Kentucky’s communities directly. This pillar connects research, service and outreach to local priorities — from agriculture and sustainability to civic engagement and community health. Together, we translate university expertise into real-world impact, working side by side with Kentuckians to build a stronger Commonwealth.

How Partners Make Progress

The AKT Network connects Kentucky’s leading institutions, businesses and communities to tackle shared challenges. Partners collaborate through formal agreements, working groups and shared initiatives across four core pillars — healthcare, education, workforce and community engagement. Together, they align programs, resources and communication to accelerate statewide progress.

FAQs

What is the Advancing Kentucky Together (AKT) Network?

The Advancing Kentucky Together (AKT) Network is a partnership framework led by the University of Kentucky to accelerate progress in health, education, workforce and community outcomes. It serves as a unifying framework that connects people and organizations working to expand opportunity and make Kentucky healthier, wealthier and wiser. Through shared goals and coordinated action, AKT helps align efforts across sectors to create measurable change and lasting impact.

Why was the Advancing Kentucky Together Network created?

The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees challenged the university to do more than any institution in the country to improve the lives of the people it serves. The AKT Network was created in response to that charge — to bring together public and private partners whose work supports Kentucky’s health, prosperity and future.

How does the AKT Network work?

AKTN is not a new office or program. It is a partnership model that connects existing initiatives across the University and beyond. The network helps partners share ideas, align goals and develop scalable, community-based solutions that advance Kentucky’s health, education and economy.

Who can be part of the AKT Network?

Any organization or unit that shares AKTN’s goals can participate — including colleges and departments within UK, other higher-education institutions, healthcare providers, businesses, nonprofits and community organizations. If you're interested in becoming a partner, submit this form

What types of partnerships does the AKT Network support?

Partnerships may include, but are not limited to:

  • Educational pathways that connect high school, college and career opportunities
  • Healthcare collaborations that expand access and innovation
  • Workforce development initiatives that prepare Kentuckians for in-demand careers
  • Community projects that strengthen local engagement and wellbeing

What are the benefits of becoming a partner?

Partners gain access to a statewide network of leaders, shared expertise and communication platforms that help amplify their impact. Being part of the network connects you to UK’s research, education and healthcare strengths, opens opportunities for new grants and initiatives, and ensures your organization’s work is recognized as part of a coordinated effort to advance Kentucky.

Partners gain:

  • Visibility through UK’s statewide communications and reports
  • Connections with collaborators across Kentucky
  • Support in developing and scaling community-based initiatives
  • Access to UK’s research, expertise and students

What kinds of initiatives are part of the AKT Network?

AKT Network partners are tackling challenges and opportunities across Kentucky. Examples include expanding rural healthcare access, growing the teacher and nursing pipelines, supporting small business innovation, advancing agricultural technologies and exploring the responsible use of artificial intelligence through CATS-AI. Each initiative shares one purpose: creating better futures for Kentuckians.

How can my organization or unit get involved?

Organizations can submit an interest form to start the conversation. The AKT team reviews each submission and follows up to learn more about your goals. From there, the team identifies how your work aligns with network priorities and where collaboration could make the greatest difference for Kentucky.

How is the AKT Network connected to the University of Kentucky’s mission?

The AKT Network is how the University of Kentucky lives its land-grant promise — to advance the Commonwealth through teaching, research, healthcare and service. It transforms that mission into a practical framework for collaboration, enabling the university and its partners to address complex challenges together.

How does the AKT Network make an impact?

The network connects ideas to action. It supports and scales initiatives that deliver real results — such as improving access to healthcare, expanding education and training pathways and building a stronger workforce across urban and rural Kentucky. Every effort is designed to improve lives and communities while creating a model other states can follow.
