Advancing Kentucky Together Network

The University of Kentucky’s vision and mission is to advance Kentucky in every way that improves the quality of life for the people of the Commonwealth. Ultimately, the single greatest challenge to that goal is ensuring a healthy state.

Health in this context means physical health — the treatment of disease and the prevention of it. But it also, importantly, means well-being, quality of life and economic vitality by growing and sustaining a skilled workforce. These broad definitions of health are interconnected and, in so many ways, inextricably linked. To advance Kentucky, its university — the University of, for and with Kentucky — must work together with, and in support of, partners to advance the health in the Commonwealth.

A Call to Action

During the October 2024 UK Board of Trustees retreat, the Board directed President Capilouto to take the next critical steps in our mission to advance Kentucky by focusing the institution’s capacity and strategic efforts on becoming the university that — along with partners — does more than anyone in the country to improve the health of the state that it serves.

Read the Board's resolution (CR1: Advancing Kentucky Together) here.

We are focused squarely and strategically on the holistic health needs of the state. Doing that successfully is the single most important way we can advance this state.

Evolving Our Partnership Model

For more than two decades, UK has established and worked with affiliates — hospitals, clinics and providers — across the state to open greater access to specialty care, such as cancer, heart disease and stroke.

The Advancing Kentucky Together Network takes that affiliate model a step further.

The Advancing Kentucky Together Network is the next evolution of our partnership model and expands our efforts to address dramatically growing health, education and workforce needs across the state. The network is an innovative model applied not only to providers but to communities. Through strategic partnerships, UK will share expertise, extend resources and foster innovation to improve health outcomes for every Kentuckian.

The creation of the network aligns with UK's longstanding commitment to:

  • Keep patients close to home when possible and appropriate.
  • Support the education, retention and recruitment of Kentucky's workforce.
  • Extend UK resources and expertise where there is an expressed need to continuously improve health outcomes and increase workforce opportunities.
  • Collaborate with partners and communities in ways that improve an organization's ability to track health outcomes and grow clinical services for both UK and the community health partner.

Partnering for a Stronger, Healthier Kentucky

Kentucky faces growing challenges, but we see even greater opportunities. At the direction of the Board of Trustees, UK aspires to partner with providers, policymakers and communities to do more for the health of its state than any other institution in the country.

The new Advancing Kentucky Together Network will enhance overall support and collaboration and aid partners in providing such initiatives as:

  • A Clinical Quality Program that will provide leadership in improving quality, safety, efficiency and experience in patient care.
  • Workforce, Education, Research and Training that will be directly tied to UK’s seven health professions colleges as well as other university resources.
  • Community Outreach and Education aimed at enhancing availability of care through access to UK’s clinical outreach program development project team.

There is much more that we can do together than we can ever accomplish on our own or apart from one another.
